Contact UsWhat Is Elevated PSA?
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is primarily found in semen but may also be present in the blood. At Metro Atlanta Urology and Pelvic Health Center, we offer a diagnostic blood test to check the levels of your PSA. Elevated PSA test results may indicate the presence of a serious condition in the prostate gland. If a high PSA level is detected, Dr. Shenelle Wilson will further investigate the cause to determine the ideal treatment options to meet your individual needs. If you are concerned your PSA level may be higher than normal, please contact our office in Kennesaw, GA to schedule a private consultation.
What Causes Elevated PSA?
Your PSA level is checked through a simple blood test. Elevated PSA levels may indicate the presence of several prostate-related conditions. Though PSA tests are commonly used to screen for prostate cancer, several factors may cause higher than normal PSA levels, including:
- Age
- Prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate)
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate)
- Increased levels of parathyroid hormone
- Surgical procedures around the groin
- Urinary tract infections
- Prostate trauma
- Recent ejaculation
- Prostate cancer
Treatment for an elevated PSA will vary, depending on what may be causing it. If it's prostate cancer, treatment options include robotic simple prostatectomy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and cryotherapy.
